                                             Policy Title:   BOARD MEMBERS' CODE OF CONDUCT
     
    When an operational issue is raised by a community member:
     
    In person or by phone:
    1.Listen without implying that you agree or disagree.
    2.Ask whether the caller has talked with the person closest to the problem.
    3.Describe the chain of command concept; that issues are best resolved at a level closest to the people involved.
    4.Ask the caller to put his/her concerns in writing.
    5.Take the opportunity to explain the Board’s role: The Board’s job is to set the vision and policies that will enable students to be successful. Resolution of operational issues is not the Board’s job. The Board supports successful resolution of that issue. 
    6.Notify the Superintendent.
    7.Tell the caller that if he/she doesn’t get satisfaction to call back (or direct the caller to let you know what happens regardless).
    8.If the call raises a high level of concern, call the Superintendent.
    9.The Superintendent will investigate and tell the Board members what he/she knows about the situation, and what, if any action was taken to resolve it.
     
    By e-mail or by letter:
    1.Forward the letter or e-mail it to the Superintendent.
    a.Let the community member know that you have forwarded the correspondence   to the Superintendent to handle.
    3.The Superintendent will investigate and tell the Board member what he/she knows about the situation, and what, if any action was taken to resolve it. Any operational issues brought to a Board member’s attention should be immediately forwarded to the Superintendent, whether or not the issue is problematic. Examples included, but are not limited to: Requests to be on the Board agenda; Requests for District information; Desire to register a complaint or compliment; Questions about different school procedures or protocol; Questions about employment opportunities at the District.
