    Colorado Model Content Standards
    For Dance
    5th Grade Level Expectations
    STANDARD 1: Students will understand and demonstrate dance skills.
    GRADE 5
    This requires that the student:
    1.1 follows a basic warm-up
    1.2 accurately memorizes and repeats age appropriate locomotor and nonlocomotor phrases
    1.3 uses accurate terms when describing basic dance steps and movements
    1.4 understands and repeats changing rhythmic patterns
    1.5 begins to understand the relationship between music and dance
     
    STANDARD 2: Students will understand and apply the principles of choreography.
    GRADE 5
    This requires that the student:
    2.1 creates a movement study in response to a set of directions
    2.2 collaborates with others to combine movement phrases
    2.3 recognizes how they can vary space, time and energy
    2.4 revises and reorders movement study
    2.5 performs for peers, and gives positive feedback by talking about parts of a dance which they liked or which were interesting
     
    STANDARD 3: Students will create, communicate, and problem solve through dance.
    GRADE 5
    This requires that the student:
    3.1 uses everyday gestures as a basis for creating a movement study, i.e. hello, good-bye
    3.2 evaluates a study done by own peers in terms of what it communicates
     
    STANDARD 4: Students will understand and relate the role of dance in culture and history.
    GRADE 5
    This requires that the student:
    4.1 studies another culture in which dance plays an important role, i.e. Native American, African, Latino
    4.2 learns a dance from this culture
    4.3 identifies origins of some current popular dances
     
    STANDARD 5: Students will understand the benefits of dance for lifelong fitness.
    GRADE 5
    This requires that the student:
    5.1 begins to identify safety aspects when doing technique
    5.2 identifies fitness goals for dancers
    5.3 understands basic nutrition and good sleeping habits
    5.4 understands what each part of the warm-up accomplishes
     
    STANDARD 6: Students will understand the relationships and connections between dance and other disciplines.
    GRADE 5
    This requires that the student:
    6.1 begins to understand how dance can be used in other art forms, i.e. ice shows, opera, musicals
    6.2 creates a study in response to a show or film he/she has seen
    6.3 begins to understand the similarity of concepts found in another discipline to those used in dance, i.e. rhythm in music, line in painting, shape in geometry
