    For Dance
    3rd  Grade Level Expectations
    STANDARD 1: Students will understand and demonstrate dance skills.
    GRADE 3
    This requires that the student:
    1.1 follows and recognizes a variety of simple dance steps and movements
    1.2 follows and demonstrates sequences that involve a greater variety of locomotor and nonlocomotor movements
    1.3 performs movement sequences that involve a greater variety of the elements
    1.4 performs more complex rhythms
     
    STANDARD 2: Students will understand and apply the principles of choreography.
    GRADE 3
    This requires that the student:
    2.1 begins to improvise in response to a set of directions
    2.2 remembers and selects from improvisation sequences
    2.3 links varied movements and shapes together with a clear beginning, middle and ending
    2.4 varies movement by using at least 2-3 different elements
    2.5 begins to revise movements created
    2.6 performs creative work for peers
     
    STANDARD 3: Students will create, communicate, and problem solve through dance.
    GRADE 3
    This requires that the student:
    3.1 begins to realize that dance can come from many sources
    3.2 demonstrates how different feelings change a short series of movements
    3.3 creates a short study based on a feeling, story, poetry, art or music
    3.4 creates a short movement sequence using a prop in a variety of ways
     
    STANDARD 4: Students will understand and relate the role of dance in culture and history.
    GRADE 3
    This requires that the student:
    4.1 performs folk dances from several cultures and knows the context in which dances were done
    4.2 creates own movements based on dances from another culture
     
    STANDARD 5: Students will understand the benefits of dance for lifelong fitness.
    GRADE 3
    This requires that the student:
    5.1 demonstrates exercises that promote strength and flexibility
    5.2 identifies the components of dance fitness
    5.3 identifies the functions of parts of the skeleton and major muscle groups
    5.4 participates in a warm-up
     
    STANDARD 6: Students will understand the relationships and connections between dance and other disciplines.
    GRADE 3
    This requires that the student:
    6.1 understands concepts from the other arts through dance, i.e. interpreting a piece of music or a painting in dance
    6.2 is able to connect with science concepts through dance movement, i.e. energy, body systems
