Colorado Model Content StandardsFor Dance2nd Grade Level ExpectationsSTANDARD 1: Students will understand and demonstrate dance skills.GRADE 2This requires that the student:1.1 recognizes some basic dance steps or movements1.2 demonstrates sequences using locomotor and nonlocomotor movements appropriate for age level1.3 does short movement sequences using different body parts, pathways, levels, directions, tempos and energies1.4 moves with and reacts to other dancers in the space1.5 demonstrates a series of movements with simple rhythmsSTANDARD 2: Students will understand and apply the principles of choreography.GRADE 2This requires that the student:2.1 takes a single movement or shape and varies it, and knows the difference between the two2.2 begins to remember some of the movements done while free dancing2.3 begins to link movements together2.4 links their own or others’ movements into a short combination with a clear beginning and ending2.5 free dances and incorporates more dance elementsSTANDARD 3: Students will create, communicate, and problem solve through dance.GRADE 2This requires that the student:3.1 demonstrates how different feelings change a movement3.2 creates more than one phrase based on stories, poetry, art and music3.3 creates a movement sequence using a propSTANDARD 4: Students will understand and relate the role of dance in culture and history.GRADE 2This requires that the student:4.1 describes several reasons why people dance4.2 performs a folk dance from another culture, and knows the context in which dance was done4.3 describes a variety of occasions in which dance is done in various culturesSTANDARD 5: Students will understand the benefits of dance for lifelong fitness.GRADE 2This requires that the student:5.1 is able to explain differences in range of motion in his/her body5.2 demonstrates safe movement techniques such as landing from a jump5.3 demonstrates exercises that promote strength and flexibility5.4 connects anatomical terms with body parts5.5 participates in a warm-upSTANDARD 6: Students will understand the relationships and connections between dance and other disciplines.GRADE 2This requires that the student:6.1 understands concepts from a few subjects through dance, i.e. writing a class story and interpreting it with dance movement6.2 draws picture of some of their dance movements
