    Colorado Model Content Standards
    For Dance
    1st Grade Level Expectations
    STANDARD 1: Students will understand and demonstrate dance skills.
    GRADE 1
    This requires that the student:
    1.1 uses both movement and stillness
    1.2 is able to transition between being on to off balance
    1.3 does movements using more than one body part at a time
    1.4 demonstrates and repeats locomotor and nonlocomotor movements appropriate for age level with basic accuracy
    1.5 begins to relate to other dancers in space
    1.6 can do movements at various levels, in different directions, and on a number of pathways
    1.7 creates own body shapes and can also copy body shapes of others
    1.8 performs short movement sequences
     
    STANDARD 2: Students will understand and apply the principles of choreography.
    GRADE 1
    This requires that the student:
    2.1continues to improve free dancing by exploring new movements
    2.2 is able to remember and repeat a movement they have observed
    2.3 sees that a movement has a beginning and end
    2.4 begins to link movements together
    2.5 varies a single movement or shape in terms of some of the elements
     
    STANDARD 3: Students will create, communicate, and problem solve through dance.
    GRADE 1
    This requires that the student:
    3.1 identifies how different feelings can change a movement
    3.2 continues to explore movement based on stories, poetry, art and music presented by the teacher
    3.3 uses a prop in different ways
     
    STANDARD 4: Students will understand and relate the role of dance in culture and history.
    GRADE 1
    This requires that the student:
    4.1 talks about why people dance in greater detail
    4.2 does a simple folk dance appropriate for this grade
    4.3 describes an occasion when dance is done by people in another culture
     
    STANDARD 5: Students will understand the benefits of dance for lifelong fitness.
    GRADE 1
    This requires that the student:
    5.1 notices differences in range of motion in his/her body
    5.2 follows safe movement techniques such as bending knees when landing from a jump
    5.3 does exercises that promote strength and flexibility
    5.4 participates in a warm-up
     
    STANDARD 6: Students will understand the relationships and connections between dance and other disciplines.
    GRADE 1                                                                                                                                 
    This requires that the student:
    6.1 understands slightly more complex concepts from another subject through dance, i.e. the life cycle of an insect or plant                                                                                                       6.2 draws picture of some of their dance movements
